Happy Wednesday!
I may be a little late to the game considering 2020 seems to have been THE year to start new hobbies, like gardening, baking bread, puzzling, (and so many others!). But, better late than never, right? Right.
I’m starting my first ever garden and I’m taking you with me!
I was inspired to get going (or growing…ha!) on this little gardening dream of mine by two things. Beginner Gardening YouTube videos AND after watching the cutest flower garden show on Discovery + “Growing Floret”. Do yourself a favor and watch it because I fell in love with all of the beautiful flowers .5 seconds into the show.
I also want to be sure and tell you that I am the most-newbie-gardener there ever could be. So, if you’re inspired to start a garden yourself (YAY!) and you feel clueless when it comes to starting one, you’re no less clueless than I am. If I can do this WE can do this. Want to know why I’m so sure on this fact?
Well, funny story really quick that I have to share with you. This gardening adventure started a few weeks back. I decided it was time to try and start a garden of my own now that we have a super sunny and roomy backyard to our new house. I’m thinking garden of eden-beautiful-flowers-everywhere-you-look vibes. Use your imagination with me, okay? 😉 So, off to the store I went to buy supplies. We went to Lowe’s and picked up the basics. And, as soon as I got home I got right to work.
As it turns out and as news to me, (don’t laugh!), you’re ONLY supposed to plant 2-3 seeds per pot. Well…Oops.

I blame it on the instructions because … there were NONE. All these cute little packets said on the back was WHEN to plant them. NOT HOW. So, now I’m working with ALL the seeds in these little pots. Nick sure got a good laugh about this because apparently he’s ‘Mr. Green Thumb’ and kept this helpful tid-bit of information from me as I was planting my little heart away that afternoon. Good news to share on this batch though, they’re growing. HA! Not sure exactly how long they’ll be able to stay in here, but for now, I’m watering them and keeping them fed as a good plant mom would. They could explode into the biggest plants ever OR they could all die …only time will tell. Stay tuned.
All of that to say, avoid planting ALL the seeds in one pot when you’re starting with your seeds. Strictly stick to 2-3 seeds PER POT. You probably already know this but I felt like if you were as newbie as me and had never planted anything in your life, well…now you know. 😉

After that little gardening fiasco settled, I told Nick I had to go back to the store because I was determined to get this seedling garden started. Second times a charm. 😉 Back to Lowe’s we went but this time I came prepared with a little more knowledge than I started with. Insert: Jiffy Seed Starting Greenhouse Kit. It comes with clear instructions (Thank goodness!) and all the supplies you need to get started.

I wanted to start with a few flowers and a few veggies just to see what I could get to really grow for me. The thought of harvesting my own veggies and weekly flowers in the spring and summer makes me so excited! How fun, right? I can’t wait to add a few fruits to the batch too! I’m thinking blueberries and blackberries would be the best! Maybe even a few strawberries, too? YUM!
I got to work following every instruction to a T because I do not want to mess this one up.
I watered, labeled and secured these little seedlings and got them settled into their new home in our kitchen while they germinate over the next few weeks.

So, here goes nothing! I hope they stick and I hope they thrive because this little newbie gardener would be so proud. I’ll be sure and keep you updated with my progress and obviously any fails in between. Here’s hoping there are less fails and more progress though. And, who knows, maybe I’ll have my own little version of growing floret down the road. We’ll see where this gardening adventure takes us!
I’m off to get to work for the day and squeeze in a peloton spin class before the “ice storm of the century” hits Central Arkansas tonight. Fingers crossed we keep our power!
Have a wonderful day!! The weekend is just a few days away!
Questions for you:
Have you ever started your own garden before?
Do you have Discovery + yet? What are your favorite shows so far?
What’s your favorite fruit/veggie?

Congratulations and good luck on the start of the garden! There’s going to be plenty of plants that will surprise you – especially seeds that you thought would never bloom, and pop up in a pot months later after mixing some dirt.
One thing I wish I knew – if you’re growing blueberries, make sure to have at least 2 plants nearby each other. They make many more berries that way.
Thanks so much Scott! I’m so glad you shared that tip about the blueberries because I feel like there are so many little things you need to know about what can be planted by what to thrive, etc. so I’ll for sure keep this in mind when we get to planting some berries here soon! Your advice is much appreciated! 🙂 Have a great day ahead!!
